HUMANS IN DESIGN LAB

College of Engineering & Petroleum
Kuwait University

Our research lab seeks to advance understanding of how human factors, cognitive workload, and socio-technical systems shape the design of complex work environments.
Through interdisciplinary research in industrial engineering, human-centered design, and decision-making, we study how systems can be designed to better support human performance, safety, and wellbeing, particularly in high-stakes and culturally specific contexts.

Mission

The mission of the Humans in Design Lab is to encourage
informed and human-centered
engineering design grounded in the understanding of cognitive workload and human performance.

We operate at the intersection of human factors, industrial engineering, and design, to advance research that supports safer, more effective, and more resilient systems.

Our work focuses on three key research areas:
Cognitive Workload

We seek to understand how cognitive demands emerge from task complexity, time pressure, and system design, and how these demands affect human performance in complex work environments.

Design Guidelines

We seek to understand how human factors research can inform design guidelines that ensure systems support human decision-making, resilience, and safety.

Design Thinking

We seek to understand how to use and teach human-centered design approaches in a way that meaningfully shapes how engineers approach complex problems.
